The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) certification is aimed at project managers who wish to demonstrate their continued intend on pursuing a career in project management, or project teams who wish to further their communications skills and knowledge of project management processes. 
 

IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THE CAPM EXAM, YOU MUST POSSESS A SECONDARY DEGREE (HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR THE GLOBAL EQUIVALENT) AND FULFILL ONE OF FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Category 1: 1,500 hours of project management work experience.

    OR

  • Category 2: 23 hours* of formal project management training.

*PMI-Montreal offers preparation courses that fulfill the 23 hour formal training requirement.  These courses are offered three times a year with varied schedule formats. 

To receive your confirmation of eligibility to sit the CAPM exam, you must submit your application according to your category. This application is available online at www.pmi.org under Certifications.

The CAPM® certification is valid for a period of five years and is not automatically renewable without repassing the exam. There are no credits or PDUs to accumulate.

The Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification is aimed at project managers with both work experience AND formal training in project management. The PMP® certification is recognized internationally.

IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THE PMP EXAM, YOU MUST FULFILL THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Category  1: Four-year degree (bachelor’s degree or global equivalent): Minimum three years/36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks  AND 35 contact hours of formal education*.

OR

  • Category  2: Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or global equivalent):Minimum five years/60 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 7,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks  AND 35 contact hours of formal education*.

*PMI-Montreal offers preparation courses that fulfill the 35 hour formal training requirement.  These courses are offered three times a year with varied schedule formats.

To receive your eligibility ID to sit the exam, you must fill out your application detailling your work experience per project management areas. Your work experience must be within the last 8 years. This application is available online at www.pmi.org under Certifications.

 

Holders of the PMP® certification must acquire 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every three-year cycle in order to maintain their certification. It is not required to be a member of PMI or PMI-Montréal to maintain your credential. The cost of renewing your certification is 100$ USD for non-members or $60USD for members.

The  Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP®) is specific to practitioners who are seeking to:

  • Demonstrate to employers their level of professionalism in agile practices of project management;
  • Increase their professional versatility in both Waterfall and agile techniques;
  • Hold a certification that is more credible than existing entry-level, training or exam-only based offerings.

The PMI-ACP® certification is aimed at project managers with both work experience and formal training in Agile project management. In order to be eligible for the PMI-ACP® exam, you must fulfill the following criteria.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE PMI-ACP® EXAM, YOU NEED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 2,000 hours of project management experience, within the last five years; AND
  • At least 1,500 hours of agile project management experience, within the last three years; AND
  • 21 hours of training in agile practices* the course offered by PMI-Montreal fulfills this requirement.

If you already PMP® or PgMP® certified, PMI considers the general project management experience requirement already fulfilled.

Holders of the PMI-ACP® certification must acquire 30 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every three-year cycle in order to maintain their certification. As a program manager, you’re a senior-level practitioner on the forefront of advancing your organization’s strategic goals. You manage multiple, related projects in a coordinated way, achieving benefits that could not occur if the projects were handled separately. The Program Management Professional (PgMP)® is a visible sign of your advanced experience and skill and gives you a distinct advantage in employment and promotion.
 

TO QUALIFY FOR THE PgMP® EXAM, YOU NEED TO MEET THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent), 6,000 hours of project management experience AND 10,500 hours of program management experience 

OR

  • Four-year degree, 6,000 hours of project management experience AND 6,000 hours of program management experience

If you have the proven ability to manage multiple, related projects and navigate complex activities that span functions, organizations, regions or cultures and to align results with organizational goals, then you’re a potential PgMP.

  • First phase of evaluation is panel review
  • The certification exam has 170 multiple-choice questions, and you have four hours to complete it.
  • To maintain your PgMP, you must earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) every three year.

PMI’s Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)® credential is a response to project management’s increasing growth, complexity and diversity. Globally recognized and demanded, the PMI-SP® fills the need for a specialist role in project scheduling management.

Schedules are a fundamental element of project management yet half of all projects — 50 percent — are not completed within the initially scheduled timeframe according to our 2015 Pulse of the Profession® report.

Projects and teams today are increasingly global and virtual, and project schedules are key to managing activities, resources, dependencies and ultimately, project outcomes. The PMI-SP® will recognize your knowledge and skill to drive the improved management of project schedules.

PMI’s Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP)® credential recognizes the advanced experience and skill of portfolio managers. The PfMP® demonstrates your proven ability in the coordinated management of one or more portfolios to achieve organizational objectives.

PfMP credential holders are responsible for the execution of the portfolio management process, communication around portfolio progress, and recommendations for action. Where project and program managers are responsible for “doing work right,” this is an ideal credential if you are responsible for ensuring your organization is “doing the right work.”

TO APPLY FOR THE PFMP, YOU NEED TO HAVE EITHER:

  • A secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree, or the global equivalent), with at least seven years (10,500 hours) of portfolio management experience within the past 15 consecutive years. 

    OR
  • A four year degree (bachelor’s degree or the global equivalent), with at least four years (6,000 hours) of portfolio management experience within the past 15 consecutive years. 

    AND
  • Since portfolio management focuses on strategic investment matters and high level organizational decisions, it is pertinent to have a foundation of professional business experience. All applicants must possess a minimum of eight years (96 months) of professional business experience.

*Project experience can include your business analysis experience. A current PMP® or PgMP® will satisfy this requirement but is not required for the PMI-PBA.

*The project experience requirement can be inclusive of the 7,500/4,500 hours of business analysis experience noted. Active PMP® or PgMP® will satisfy this requirement.
