The CAPM® certification can be completed before the PMP® by project managers who have less experience. This course covers the basics and terminology. The certification must be renewed every 3 years by accumulating 15 PDUs. The CAPM® exam is strictly based on content from the PMBOK (6th edition).

The PMP®  certification is necessary to obtain the official professional designation in project management. It must be renewed every 3 years by accumulating 60 PDUs. The exam is based on content from the PMBOK (6th edition) and professional experience.

PDU stands for professional development unit. These units are allocated when you participate in professional development activities or conferences related to project management. They are mandatory to maintain your designation. PDUs are not retroactive and are accumulated only once one of the PMI certifications is duly obtained. The different categories accepted for your PDUs are listed in the handbook related to your certification. If you are a member of PMI-Montréal and you are participating in an eligible activity on its schedule, your PDUs will be automatically transferred into your PMI Global account.

First, you need to check your eligibility, specifically the required level of education and hours of experience, in addition to the 35 hours of mandatory training (the PMI-Montréal preparation course fulfills this requirement). Fill out the application available at pmi.org, in the Certifications and training section. Your eligibility will be confirmed within 10 business days. Once you are accepted, you will receive a link to sign up for the exam at Prometric.

An audit process may follow, with the aim of validating the information provided in your application. If this is the case, you will receive all the necessary documents. Not all applications are verified, but we recommend that you nevertheless notify your references.  Once the audit is successfully completed, you will receive a confirmation number. You can then make an appointment to take your certification exam at Pearson VUE, on the date of your choice. You will know right after the exam whether or not you passed.

The PMP® exam includes 200 multiple-choice questions. You have 4 hours to complete the exam and the passing score is 61%. The CAPM® includes 150 multiple-choice questions. You have 3 hours to complete the exam and the passing score is 66%. Exams are available in French or in English.  You need to specify your preference when you register.

In addition to the PMI-Montréal training manual handed out during your first class, you must have the PMBOK 6th edition, available at pmi.org, in the PMBOK Guide and Standards section (price: US$49.50 for members and US$65.95 for non-members). Both the course and the exam are based on this reference guide. It is essential. Members have access to a free downloadable PDF version. To access it, members simply need to log in to their account at pmi.org. The UQAM coop also carries the PMBOK 6th edition at the special PMI-Montréal member price.
