“Risk Management: A Way of Life.”

The “Project Risk Management Excellence Class” is an interactive one-day training session, best taken IN-PERSON, that balances theory, principles, and practical applications. This course is designed for individuals who already have some experience in project management and will enable them to refine their understanding of integrated risk management throughout the project lifecycle and beyond. It will cover the essentials of the relevant theory and principles, as well as governance, practical application, and real-world case studies.

In particular, this training is intended for:

• Executives and other management professionals seeking to apply integrated project risk management as a tool for success.
• Program managers and professionals in the corporate project management office seeking to improve project governance.
• Project managers and Project Control Officers (PCOs) who wish to expand their theoretical and practical knowledge of integrated project risk management.
• Project risk managers who want to refine their knowledge of the subject.
• Team leaders and functional managers involved in projects.
• Anyone with a solid foundation in project management and/or risk management who wishes to deepen their knowledge of the subject.

The course aims to refine participants’ knowledge and skills regarding the governance and practice of integrated project risk management as a tool for success in a real-world, ambiguous, and constantly changing context.

OBJECTIVES

• Establish the key elements of an “Integrated Project Risk Management Plan (IPRMP)” as a generic model for managing risk in future projects.
• To enhance participants’ knowledge and skills regarding:
• Governance, processes, terminology, and the context of integrated risk management and project risk management;
  Related tools and techniques; and
  The integration of the human factor at all stages of risk management.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Understand the key elements of an integrated project risk management plan, from the project requirements statement through the transition of deliverables to operations.
• Identify and acquire a basic understanding of risk management tools and techniques and their applications throughout a project’s lifecycle.
• Understand the links between project management and other areas of performance and cross-functional project management, such as procurement, quality, and others.
• Understand how information sources interact in project risk management.
• Understand the key roles in risk management at the project, program, operations, and governance levels.
• Identify key references and their contributions in the field of project risk management.
• This course is not intended to prepare students for the “RMP” (“Risk Management Professional”) certification.

BIOGRAPHY

Serge Garon, CD, EurIng, Eng. (ret.), MSc, PMP, CMII
Serge is an internationally renowned trainer and consultant with over 35 years of experience in project governance, project management, and teaching. He is a PMI-certified trainer and served as a lecturer in project risk management and major risk management at UQAM for 22 years. His experience also includes serving as an executive at the Canadian Space Agency and as a marine engineer and naval architect for the Royal Canadian Navy.
At the Canadian Space Agency, he served as Executive Director of Program Assurance, the Corporate Project Management Office, and Quality and Safety Assurance for space missions. His responsibilities at the Agency included: Director of the Canadian project for the James Webb Space Telescope, Risk Manager for the Canadarm-2 program (International Space Station), member of the astronaut recruitment team, and one of the managers of the emergency shelter center (during the 1998 ice storm).
As a member of the Canadian Navy, Serge served as Chief Ship Engineer, Chief Naval Architect for shipbuilding projects, and Deputy Manager of the Canadian Forces Space Program.

Serge is a renowned author and speaker, particularly on the topic of risk management. He has spoken at the International Aerospace Congress, the PMI Risk SIG, the annual conference of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, the annual PMI-Montréal Symposium, and other events. He is also the author or co-author of several articles, including “Coping with Project Complexity” (PM World Journal, May 2021), among others.
Serge is a graduate of MIT (Graduate Certificates in Shipyard Management and Ship Protection), University College London (MSc in Naval Architecture and Graduate Certificate in Submarine Design), and Laval University (Chemical Engineering). He has received several honors, including: the TM Pallas Award (Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering), a Commendation from the Chief of National Defense (Canadian Forces), and the Paul Harris Award (Rotary Club).
Serge also finds time for volunteer work, including for the KGP International Competition, and enjoys sharing his insights with today’s managers.
