IPD in Action: Can you deliver the project... and keep your chocolates?

What happens when the client, professionals, and contractors have to make decisions together, with a target cost to respect and gains to share?

The PMI-Montreal Construction Circle invites you to discover and experience Integrated Project Delivery (IPD).

A presentation by Charles Aboukhaled, P.Eng., M.Eng., PMP, MSP, will first introduce the principles of IPD and, most importantly, the mechanisms that allow various stakeholders to work together, align their interests, and create greater value for the project.

Participants will then put theory into practice with a 45-minute simulation. Working in teams, participants will take on the roles of the client, project manager, professionals, and contractors. Their mandate: deliver a fictional project despite unexpected events and changes, all while respecting a shared target cost. Every decision will impact the team's results... and the chocolates they get to keep!

A debrief session will follow to discuss the decisions made and what they reveal about collaboration in real-world projects. Networking opportunities are also planned, and a space will be available for participants who wish to bring their own lunch and continue the discussion on-site.

No prior knowledge of IPD is required.

Objective

This activity aims to bring together project management and construction professionals who hold different roles in project delivery. The presentation will provide them with benchmarks on how to pool expertise and make choices that benefit the entire project through Integrated Project Delivery (IPD); the simulation will then allow them to compare perspectives and make decisions as a team.

Often approached from a legal and contractual perspective, IPD will be explored here through the lens of collaboration and value creation. Discussions will focus on its practical application: how to share useful information, manage the unexpected, reconcile differing interests, and jointly choose a solution that creates the most value for the project.

Charles Aboukhaled, P.Eng., PMP: Collaborative coach and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) facilitator

Mr. Charles Aboukhaled is an engineering-construction project management expert with nearly 30 years of experience in the execution and governance of major projects. Throughout his career, he has supported major organizations such as Hydro-Québec, the Montreal Port Authority, the Société de transport de Montréal, and the Société de développement et de mise en valeur du Parc olympique. He has also served as an expert advisor for due diligence reviews of major infrastructure projects for the Secrétariat du Conseil du trésor du Québec and the Société québécoise des infrastructures. He acts as an advisor and coach for the rollout of collaborative contracts.

A specialist in risk analysis and contingency management, Charles has contributed to the development of tools and methods to establish rigorous connections between project risks, financial contingencies, and various delivery methods. A renowned speaker and professor in his field, he has been teaching at Polytechnique Montréal for 24 years.
